need help getting AA to record on windows 7

Hi. Im trying to get Audition 3.0 to record on windows 7. When I hit record I get a message that DirectSound is chosen and I would do better using and selecting a ASIO driver. There is no ASIO driver listed. When I installed ASIO4ALL still no dice.

It must be something simple I am doing wrong.

Can anyone help?

You don't say what audio interface you are using. If you have an external USB interface then you should use the manufacturer's provided ASIO drivers. Since AA3 is basically ASIO only if you don't have interface provided ASIO drivers then the default is to use Audition 3.0 Windows Sound which translates the Windows DirectSound or MME drivers into ASIO. But, of course, you then have to have your soundcard correctly set up in the Windows Sound mixer panel.

As ryclark says, to be specific on this we need details of that sound card/audio interface you're using.

However, some general guidelines:

First, in the Record Options of the Windows Audio Control Panel (accessible by right clicking the little loudspeaker icon in the bottom right of your screen) set the device you want to use to be the default device. Normally, you also want to set the Playback Device to the same thing. You'll likely be okay, but I'd also go to the Advanced menu tab and set the sample rate and bit depth to match what you want to use.

Once you have that done, go to Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware in Audition. Select the Device Class you need (normally MME for built in cards or ASIO if you have a proper external interface. I wouldn't bother with ASIO4ALL at this stage. Once the driver type (Device Class) is set, make sure the right interface hardware is selected on the drop down menus.

Finally, assuming you're recording in Multitrack, (highly recommended) set up your session then, on the input control for each track (marked by a right facing arrow) select the inputs from yor audio device as required. This;ll likely be Mono/Default Stereo source 1 and source 2 in the second track. These wordings may vary with your brand of hardware.
