Question

needing urgent advice - recording volume

Hi forum,

I'm a technophobe but use Adobe Audition for recording my voiceover work. Everything was going swimmingly until I raised the level of my recording by dragging the volume lines in the box in the middle of the recording (the little lines next to the wheel middle of the recording screen - sorry not to use technical terms) - and then saved the recording at the new level of volume.

I then went to record a new file and ...the recording is off the scale loud and distorted - with the recording measures shooting up way above -1db - and when I listen back it's ridiculously loud and completely distorted.  I cannot now record at the usual level I record at and don't know how to change it back to  the original preset.

Please can anyon help me? - I have work I need to do and can't.  I would really appreciate any insight and hope that it's a simple button I need to press to find the original recording preset I had on there.

Thanks so much, Sarah W

You need to go back a step... Audition doesn't, and indeed cannot, set the level at which you are recording. It only records what has been sent from your sound device, whatever that is. So initially we need some more information to get any further. Firstly is this a Mac or a PC? Then it would be useful to know what hardware you are using (if it's an external device, what microphone, etc).

If you've actually altered something within Audition and it's made everything louder, then this will only be the replay level that you've affected - not the recording. What you need to do is get Audition back to 'normal' and then we can go through the steps you need to achieve sensible recording levels. Hopefully in the process you'll become slightly less of a technophobe. Look at it this way; actually understanding a bit about this is enpowering!

Hey Steve,

Thanks for getting  back to me. You're right! - there's no excuse in this day and age not to learn a little more about my equipment and how to use it properly. I'm on it!

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd gen interface;  AKG C214 Mic,  AKG headphones and adobe audition.  Working on a laptop Windows 10.  I've just downloaded the Focusrite  Scarlett...2i2 app to my laptop, as someone advised me to - I didn't have this before, but understand it will help with quality.  But it won't of course solve my current volume and distortion issue.  I'll go back through everything I did, as you advise - and see  if I can do anything to rectify the volume of new recordings.  Any other advice, please feel free to throw it at me. Best - Sarah
