Playback randomly stops working

Frequently while working in Audition CC 2015, the ability to play the track suddenly stops. I hit spacebar, playhead doesn't move. Click on play, playhead doesn't move. I just all of a sudden lose the ability, even thought it was working just seconds earlier. Only closing Audition and re-opening solves it, which is obviously much less than ideal.

Is there a known fix for this?

I've been having this issue for a while too, to the point that I could barely work because I always need to have more than one app open. Today I noticed that I had an input source selected although I was not using one, but rather editing audio recorded on another device. I am working on a PC and in the past I have recorded with a mic directly connected to the PC. Changing the input audio source (Audio Hardware > Default Input) to 'none' seems to have fixed my problems for now.

That will by its very nature alter the source of the clock signals to internally generated ones, and yes that might well be all you needed to do.

I know it's easy to spend other people's money, but this is one of many good reasons NOT to use built in sound chips with MME (Windows) drivers. Decent specialist USB audio interfaces with ASIO drivers start at around $100 and will cure this problem as well as greatly improving your sound, making it easier to use decent microphones, etc. etc.

Not sure if this is the same issue, but make sure the Audio Input matches the Audio Output. Having different ones can cause sampling word clock errors that causes playback issues.

Pretty much the only cause of the playhead not moving when you hit play is Audition not being able to pick up your sound card/audio interface. I'd have a check to see what programme are running in background and whether any of them are the sort of thing that might "steal" the soundcard. If you find anything, simply closing and obvious programme. The other thing to do is to turn off all system sounds, either in the Windows control panel or Mac equivalent.
