poor performance all around on good machine

8 track film audio edit, soloing each track.  Yes, there is a decent amount of filtering but nothing crazy, simple dialogue right now.  Pre-Render is turned on.

When I make a selection and go to wave from for a small edit everything goes epic upon return to multitrack.  The workspace spazzes out and takes many different forms and has to be reset after every round trip.  As well, it can be many seconds to start play again as "calculating play back" is shown.

working on m2 Samsung Evo drive with plenty of space, 96 gigs ram, Realtek audio, 8 core e5 xeon processor,

The same machine that I have done most all my audition work on with far fewer problems.

update: any type of edit I attempt causes the workspace to re-proportion and the windows all have to be dragged back to their positions.  This is followed by a fair amount of lag time.

Is this using the latest release v. 10.1.1.11 of Audition? It shouldn't happen but can't you reset your Workspace from one of the Workspace icons in the top right without having to re drag everything back into position. When you click on one of the icons you should get a drop down menu including 'Reset to saved layout'.

    Ryclark,

the workspace reset does not work, it is as if I changed my workspace preset.

I took all the effects off of the track and can make edits smoothly now which would lead me to believe it was a horsepower issue.  Any thoughts?  What kind of horsepower would cure such a thing?  It is a 50-minute film.  Or am I missing something else?
