Punch and roll - no automatic cross fade?

Did you ever figure out something that worked for you?  I've just started using adobe audition & had the same question.

Punch and Roll is a bit awkward from that point of view. The way that crossfades work is that they are only available between separate clips, and what P&R does is place another clip (or clips) on top of an existing clip - which doesn't have a break in it - so no crossfade available at that point. I did wonder whether the 'smooth all edit boundaries' setting in Prefs>Data would influence this, but I can't get it to here - because once again, it doesn't think that there's an edit.

The only way I know of to give your punched audio crossfade handles is to bring the original track to the foreground, and put a split in it in the middle of where your punch-in is. Then, when you bring the punched audio to the foreground, you'll get crossfade options. Yeah, that's a bit of a kludge, but that's all there is on offer at present, I'm afraid, and I'm sure you can see why with the present crossfade rules.

I think that there is something to be said for there being an option to place a split underneath any punch-in. Then at least you could make adjustments without having to make the split manually. That would at least be something...
