Re-editing a mixdown file

Hi there - I saved my mixdown file that had my audio, music and sound effects by going to File -> export ->multitrack mixdown -> entire session.  I gave it a name and saved it.  I then sent it to someone to review.  A few days later, getting together with that person he listens to the file that I sent him and states that I need to increase my voice since it is somewhat overpowered by the music.

How do I recall my mixdown file in Adobe Audition that will show me the audio file in the first track, the music in the second track, etc.  I can't seem to figure out how to recall that file so that all the different sounds show up in the tracks that they were on when I saved it as 'Entire session'.

That is the purpose of the Session file that the system made you create when you started your mix. You go back to that, alter your mix and then mix it down again. If you haven't done anything else since, it should be at the top of the upper section of the 'Open Recent' list.

Hello and thank you for telling me about the 'open recent'. I may know the reason of my issue. I'm not sure if this is it but . . .

I never did a save-as when I finished my audio/music/sound effects demo reel and just went directly to Export File.

Maybe that is why I cannot find any .sesx files. Isn't this the extension given for when you save files? and when exporting, it gives the extension 'mixdown'?

No, not quite. .sesx is the format in which the session information (not audio) is saved in. It contains all of the information about what you did in your session, but that's all. The audio is a separate issue and would have an extension like *mixdown.wav or *mixdown.mp3. Audition backs up the session files, but it doesn't back up the audio; you have to look after that.

 

But you would have got a warning when you tried to close the session without all of it, and the audio, being saved somewhere, so if you didn't get one then it's either saved the session, or you missed this completely and closed without saving - in which case you'll have to hope that the automatic .sesx backup system has worked, and that you'll be able to at least find a late version of what you did. If you go to Edit>Preferences>Autosave and backup, you will find the default location of your backups, which should be within the session folder (although this is not obligatory).
