You could also use a multi channel external audio interface (I use the MOTU UltraLite-Mk3 Hybrid) that allows you to re-route the PC audio output to either the device bus or an input channel.  That allows also allows you to monitor the audio as it’s recording into Audition.  I should add that not all multi-channel audio interfaces allow you do this, and they are quite expensive.

Steve G’s suggestion to use SoundTap is a great one.  I use SoundTap too as it’s just so easy and convenient to use.

Yes, it's a nice simple thing you want to do... but unfortunately Microsoft and the RIAA don't want you to record desktop audio (aka 'what you hear', etc) at all, because you might record something that's copyrighted. So they make it rather hard for you to do in a lot of instances.

There are, fortunately, a number of ways around this - some more complicated than others. There is a technically very advanced way that in principle would let you record streaming audio direct into Audition, and that uses something called Virtual Audio Cable. When you've got it going, it's great. Trouble is, that's seriously difficult to do, and it's not my preferred way at all these days.

What I use is SoundTap - Streaming Audio Recorder. Capture Audio &amp Music on PC or Mac. This works a treat. You only use it for capture - doesn't really do anything else, but it sets up the whole recording scenario for you, and also lets you capture the mic too.

Recording Skype also has its issues, and there are several Skype-specific recorders out there - many of them free, and easy to find with a search.

Yes, if you can get virtual audio cable to work, it's possible to do all of your recording in Audition. But in many ways you're better off using a dedicated app for this, and using Audition as an editor to assemble your stuff afterwards, which is what it really excels at.
