Question

remote overdub - click track?

How are you. I’m wondering if someone could help? My bassist and I recorded a song live toAdobe Audition using a click-track.  Our song has three separate tracks - lead vocal, acoustic guitar, and electric bass. I’d like to send the song to a friend (in another state) so he can remotely add mandolin to the song. My friend uses Garageband, and since I want him to use the same click-track that we used, must I turn that click-track into an audio track (in Audition) and send it to him as a separate .wav file? Or, is that click-track already recorded (but “mute-able” if need be) on one of the original vocal, guitar or bass tracks? Also, when I send him the song, should I “bounce” all three separate tracks (four, if the click-track is included?) to a single .wav file? Take care and thanks so much! - Brock

The click track is generated on the timeline - it isn't recorded as such, so yes you have to record it separately, by running the session with the metronome's (s) button depressed, which will turn yellow - this will solo the metronome into the output, and then re-routing the output back into the input and recording it as a new track. You can do this even with a standard stereo device without too much difficulty, although you'll need the right leads to create the external loopback. Yes it's a bit of a pain and I think it should have been fixed years ago so that you can record it directly.

As for what you do with the results, it's fairly straightforward - if you select Export>Multitrack Mixdown and look at the Mixdown Options, you'll see that you can select exactly what you want to send, and that's how you  output your tracks - as separate files, including the metronome one you generated. For this purpose you can take the check out of the Mix options, and just output individual tracks to the location you've selected above. When the recipient opens the files, they should all line up correctly.
