Reverb and vocals

Why do i loose so much upfrontness to my vocals after adding reverb? I do compression and eq before reverb...should i do that after to try and add the upfrontness back to the vocal with eq? I dont even really add alot of reverb, jus a small touch but it always pushes my vocals back really far. Any ideas?

It's also possible that what you are hearing is a cut in the 'direct' sound actually introduced during the reverb's processing. Set the direct level back to 100%, and use the reverb level to set the amount of reverb added to it.

If you want to make your voice stand out more clearly from the reverb, then you need generally to do a couple of things: Firstly, delay the onset of the reverb from the voice by somewhere around 50-100ms (i.e. insert a delay first). This can make more difference than you might think... and the second thing to try, that also makes a difference for a very similar reason, is removing most, or even all of the first reflections from the reverb. It will remove a lot of its character, but that's almost certainly what is making your vocals less clear.

Well that's really the point of reverb. But maybe you are using the wrong type of reverb, sometimes adding 'ambience' rather than reverb works best on vocals. Or even some short delayed repeats rather than wishy washy long reverb.
