Spacebar now recording not stopping and starting?

For some reason, in Audition ( latest version I think, on a Mac ) my space bar has ceased to perform stop and start playback and now only records. I've tried to remove that command from the keyboard short cuts menu but it's still doing it - any suggestions, please? it's driving me insane! Many thanks.
