Spinning Wheel of Death When Editing

I usually have had no problems with editing an Audition project in real-time. Everything goes smooth, no freezing up, perfect. Then, last night I was editing an Audition project file and I was experiencing the Spinning Wheel of Death (multicolor pinwheel you see on a Mac machine) every three minutes. Then, it would take about 30 seconds for it to unfreeze. then repeats again after three minutes. This caused the editing process to take longer than usual.

Does anyone know what may be causing this?

No, but I may be seeing the PC analog of that.  I accepted an Adobe-pushed update of Audition within the last few days, and it seems once again the update is toxic.  Now, whenever I use the healing brush, Audition gets insanely laggy, and one and half of my 16 cores peg indefinitely, never clearing.  I've never seen this before from the healing brush.  Hardwarewise, my PC is a pure beast, so this is software driven.

Thanks - that's what I'm thinking too since my computer has all the specs (and more) and is less than 3 months old.
