Split and insert

Question

Hi. I have an audio file with spoken text. I have a phrase that I want to cut out of the video and another small clip to insert to replace it. However, the split command seems to be greyed out. What am I missing in order to do this? I am sure this is a pretty common thing to do and I must be missing a step.

Split only works in Multitrack. It doesn't actually 'split' anything, because Multitrack is a non-linear virtual environment. But if you open a Multitrack session and import your two files, you can make a virtual split where you want it, shove the other part of the file along a bit, insert your file where you want it to be (you can even crossfade it if you want) and export the result to a new file. Actually very quick and easy, and if you save the session you can alter it after the event if you want or need to.
