Static during voiceover pauses on mixdown .wav - but sounds fine on original!

I recorded a podcast in Adobe Audition as a waveform. The .wav file sounds fine - 10 second excerpt .

I then put the .wav file into multitrack. Now when I listen to it and export it (with or without a music bed), there are pops of loud static whenever there is a pause in the voiceover - you can hear a 10 second excerpt here.

Anybody know what's causing this, and how I can avoid it?

Hmm... the metadata analysis also shows that the mixdown file is 10 years old, and has been through 29 resource events on three versions of Audition: CS6 and Audition 13 on a Mac, and Audition 13 on a PC. But if we go with the obvious clue, then the culprit will be the Speech Volume Leveler settings - the noise gate offset isn't set correctly.

You are absolutely right, SteveG - it was the Speech Volume Leveler settings.

Once the Speech Volume Leveler was removed, all was well.

Funny about the 29 resource events and the mixdown file being 10 years old! I've just downloaded Adobe Audition this month and don't have a PC, but I did run the track through my old copy of Garage Band in a desperate attempt to fix things.

I guess it shows that nothing is forgotten online...

Thank you for your help.

Hi Kay,

My file analysis program shows the following for the mixdown file.

Comment   Audition Template: 1 Mono Host track (with Speech Volume Leveler), 1 Mono Interview track (with Speech Volume Leveler), 1 Stereo Sound FX with effects, 1 Stereo Music Bed track. 44.1k, 16 bit, Stereo Master.

So, you have done more than just put it into the multitrack 🙂

Please confirm what effects you put on the clip in multitrack and the settings of each.

Best regards, Euan.

You were absolutely right, Euan - there was a Speech Volume Leveler on the track, and this was causing the fuzziness during pauses in the voiceover.

Once the Speech Volume Leveler was removed, the fuzziness disappeared.

Thanks for your input!
