Question

Static even when recording nothing on a new laptop

I'm using a new laptop with windows 10. I use a Rode NT1 wth the AI1 interface. all the settings are the same, default for the most part. As soon as I start recording I get a constant static at -53db. There's no sounds from anywhere. I can't get rid of it afterwards as it affects the voice as well. Is there something in the settings to shut it down. I don't want to try and fix it afterwards. It never happened in the old laptop, which my wife uses now. when I reverted back to that, everything worked perfectly. Why would I get static? Any tips? Thx

Are you running it from its power supply, or the internal battery? If it's the power supply, then try using the battery. Haven't heard so much about this happening lately, but it's still a possibility that it's the root of your problem...

Also I have tried it without the mic and I still get static using the default laptop mic setup. Checked with the old laptop and all the settings are the same.

From what you write, the only thing that has changed is the actual laptop being used!

I would, therefore, start with an "assumption" that the problem might well be something to do with the laptop.  Especially since you say the same is happening if you use the default mic setup.
