Total RMS value

Question

When I scanned the audio under amplitude statistics, and checked the Total RMS value of the audio file, it was showing negative sign. But the RMS (Root mean Squared) value never comes in negative when calculated manually. As the names suggests squared, even the negative sign gets positive after squaring.But I did not get any answer through Internet searching also. Please solve this problem ASAP and tell me the solution.

Quite! You are confusing the way in which RMS values are calculated (which always gives a positive number) with the way that relative numbers of dB are used - so it's quite normal to refer, for instance, to a -3dB point on a curve, and in a frequency response, to +/- dB limits.

The results shown in Audition's Amplitude Statistics window are shown as values in dB. Therefore it is perfectly feasible for the results to be shown with negative values since they are relative to the Maximum possible level which is 0dBFS. Generally the RMS value will always be negative as any positive dB signal would be exceeding the normal digital maximum audio level and would require adjustment before being published.
