Track Metering Inconsistent

I can't get the I/O level meters to stay on when I'm working in multitrack. They will work consistently on the master bus but only briefly on individual track meters. If I make an adjustment to the track (turn an effect on/off or adjust a parameter) then I'll see the meter briefly but then it will drop out.

 

It happens in individual effects also. If I'm trying to set a compressor I can only see the metering for a moment or two after I make adjustments.

 

Help please.

PC, but I've actually resolved the issue and it was my own dumb fault.
That's how the meters behave when you select the track to pre-render. The
meters work fine with that function turned off. Thanks for your reply.
