Tracks overlapping in multitrack

If I go to say add an exisiting track, or make a new track in audition... then want to hear it as I am adding a second track. The first track picks up in the second tracks recording. I cannot figure out how to make this stop. I have recorded this way a million times with audition in the past and never had this issue,

    It an alesis Multimix 4. And sorry for the double post

    Your problem is probably with the little button marked 'Ext USB to main' . If that button is pressed the return signal from Audition gets sent back into the mix to be rerecorded with your new track. Make sure that it isn't pressed when recording.

    This generally means that the first track, being  played back by Audition into your sound device, is being mixed there with the incoming signal that you are recording on the second track - not really an Audition issue, as a rule, but to do with the way your sound device is set up. So initially, we need to know what sound device you are using...
