Trying to find the optimum 'look ahead' and 'release times' when matching volume for compilations

Hi there, I've been creating personal mix discs of pop/rock/dance music for some time and have recently srtarted to use Adobe Audition to normalise the audio for each of my projects, so that the volume is consistent accross all the various songs which I compile within an album. I'm finding that the 'match loudness' function is working well. I tend to go with a track which is showing as the median LUFs (i.e. -11 LUFs) and then match all the volumes accross all other tracks to this level.

I've been using the standard look ahead and release time settings (i.e. default of 12ms look ahead and 200ms release time) and in a lot of cases, it does it perfectly. However, I found that one track (which was at a really quiet level of -23 LUFs), once matched to -11 LUFs, it displayed some unusual playback whereby at one point of the track, the volume levels seemed to pulsate a bit, which was quite noticeable. I kept it matched to the same level (i.e. -11 LUFs) but decided to play around with the settings and increased the look ahead time to 20ms and decreased the release time 40ms. This seemed to fix the problem completely and the track was both matched to the right volume level and played just like a louder version of the original with no defects.

My query really is about trying to find those optimum look ahead and release time settings. The default of 12/200ms seem to work well (with no noticeable sound defects) in a number cases but with a compilation mix of 30 or 40 songs, I suspect there will be some which contain the sort of sound defects I have picked up above. Is there any way of deterining what type of look ahead and release times might work best with a particular type of song? Are there recommended settings for tracks which are very quiet and are then being made considerably louder? Or settings which are best used for different types of music?

Any suggestions gratefully received!
