Upgrade confusion and frustrations!

My laptop was stolen and everything's gone. Had Audition 3.0 for years - loved it - and am now using a laptop with Audition CC 2015, build 8.0.0.192 (I incorrectly called it 5.5. Sorry, new to me).

Well. What a train wreck. Everything's different, and the manual is, as usual for Adobe, unhelpful. Couldn't find what I need on forums, either.

1. The toolbar where I put my most-used favorite filters seems totally gone, and I see no way to add ANYTHING to that area. That just kills my productivity; I'm left with pulling EQ, Normalize, etc. from the drop-down EACH TIME. That's progress?

2. I can't just click over to Multitrack or back to Waveform (why is it no longer called the more-correct Edit?) without it wanting me to create a new session! I don't WANT to make new sessions-- I want to go back and forth at will! I often want to test stuff or do quick temp things. I can't even GO TO the Multitrack to open an existing session without having to make a new one! WTF? This is profoundly stupid.

3. WHen it does want me to make a new session, it has a default location that I cannot seem to change. Of course, I can do it once, but every time? It points to OneDrive, which I just plain don't use. Argh!

There's more-- again, I haven't found Adobe's manual to be any help at all. I'm already beyond frazzled from losing all my files-- I just am not willing to stay with this, if I can't make it work for me. There are other programs out there.

    How come you are still using CC 2015? If you have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription that you need to use any CC version of Audition you should be able to use the latest CC 2018 version.

    However that doesn't help your predicament with the operation of Audition. Unfortunately many things were changed when the software was rewritten to be cross platform compatible with Apple Mac computers as well as PCs.

    You are correct that there is no longer a customisable Toolbar I'm afraid. But there are now many more customisable keyboard shortcuts which is the way to go rather than the Toolbar. This can save on an awful lot of moving the mouse about on screen. Also you ahve the Favorites menu where all your regularly used effects can be stored and accessed by a shorcut key.

    The Multitrack behaviour has only changed slightly in as much as you have to have a session open, whether new or previous, before you can do anything there. This was the case in AA3 as soon as you went to record anything anyway and is needed since Multitrack editing is full non destructive and has to have a .sesx file open in which to store the instructions generated by Multitrack editing. You can always save a Test.sesx file to use as a default session if you want to try things out. 

    As far as the default path for new session saving is concerned you should be able to browse to wherever you want on your computer to save the New session. Audition should then remember where this was for all subsequent requests for a new session. But as mentioned above if you have a Test session always available you can use that and then save the result as a Save As with a new file name when you are ready.

    However all that said as you have had a registered version of Audition 3 you should be able to download the free version that Adobe has provided since they stopped supporting the AA3 activation server. Audition 3 and the activation service

    Hi. I've been away, hence the delay in replying back. Thank you for your answer. I'm unable to mark it as correct, since I haven't been able to

    I've also been trying to get used to the new program (2015), which is what I've got. Again, it's on the computer I was given, and I don't have a way to maintain any sort of subscription. But, I'm willing to bet, a newer version would be even more maddening than this one. So, just as well.

    I've always used shortcuts, which, as you point out, DO make things easier, to a point. But, I really don't want to rely on a slew of shortcuts/key combos to do stuff. My brain just doesn't want to deal with them. I've already got one hand on keys and one on a mouse (yes, I ABSOLUTELY can't edit with a trackpad-- I can't even imagine it). It's FAR easier and more reliable for me to click on a shortcut I've placed in the toolbar. That's just the way that works for me, and I like it. Period.

    I'm sorry, that thing with having to have a session open before doing anything is just unacceptable. What an unnecessary pain! And, from my experience, you're incorrect in saying that it was basically the same in AA3. It just wasn't. I've used it for years, I'm sure I'd know. This just complicates things rather than streamline them.

    Finally, I fully intend to go back to AA3. This (2015) is the first CC product I've ever used (again, I needed something fast, and I was given this laptop, and this is the version that was on it). It's just making me too crazy, and I'm spending my time cursing and resenting Adobe for ruining a perfectly good, functional and sensibly-designed app. It wasn't broke, and I guess my needs aren't as demanding as some. (On a superficial level, merely changing "Edit" to "Waveform" seems stupid to me.)

    Thanks for the link to AA3. Frankly, I'm surprised Adobe allows this. The steps to going back look a bit daunting, and I don't know that I'll even be able to do it without any subscription info of my own (it's no longer possible to contact this laptop's original owner). If I can't, I WILL find something else. I just don't have a shred more patience to try and make sense of the CC engineers' thinking. Life's too short. I know what works for me, and I'll keep doing that until I can't.
