USB audio input converter mutes and then uninstalls speaker

I use Adobe Audition 3.0 in Windows 10.
I have done single-source recordings for decades, but now windows doesn't recognize my input device.

I have a tascam converter to USB. I have used microphones and line output through this device with no problems. Lately I added some plug and play speakers, with a headphone jack to the system.

Now, when I plug in the Tascam, it mutes the speakers, including the headphone jack.

When I check the audio hardware setup the speakers are now nowhere to be found, and I have to exit audition and reinstall the speakers.

I can get no audio input to the multi-track view, regardless of speaker status...

Is either Windows, Audition, or Tascam doing something behind the scenes with my drivers?

this makes love multi-tracking impossible. Help!
