Question

Very Long Load Time for Sessions/Clips

Hi everyone,

I've been having this issue for the past month, trying to find an answer/workaround. I am doing the sound mix for a feature that came out of Premiere (selected edit, edit in audition, entire sequence, export video, no dynamic link) and every time Audition needs to restart for whatever reason, the clips are "loading" for what is most likely 12 hours. This is an approximate because I've been opening it in the morning before I go to work and editing/mixing when I get home.

The load time is definitely not fast enough considering premiere could load the whole project in just under 5 minutes including all the audio and video clips. There's only one very small video file in this Audition projet.

There is no specific error message, just a ridiculous amount of greyed out clips with a "loading" circle on them.

My computer specs:

OS X El Capitan v 10.11.6

4 GHz Intel Core i7

24GB memory, 1600 MHz DDR3

Audition specs:

2017.1 release

Build 10.1.0.174

I am using an external hard drive which houses my project files. The only thing I haven't tried is moving the project files/clips directly to the computer's hard drive. I have tried the following:

  • New export from Premiere (various options including dynamic link, currently not using dynamic link)
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling Audition and Premiere (and while I was at it, all the other CC programs on this Mac)
  • Waiting for what feels like an eternity to get this session to load

Could it be any of the following?

  • Too many tracks in the session
  • Files located on an external hard drive
  • A weird config of Audition
  • Something else?

Any ideas or tips on how to solve this are HUGELY appreciated! Thanks!

Depending on the contents of your Premiere Sequence, Audition may have to render some audio before it can be used in Audition. We're working on harmonizing the different parts of Premiere and Audition so that isn't necessary as much. This may be what you're hitting, but it is difficult to tell without some screenshots and knowing if there are any particular warning or informational dialogs that come up when you open your sequence.

Hi, I'm stuck on the same issue. Did you ever find a solution to this problem?

I had the same issue...half of my tracks did not load, and previous .OMF export was damaged (or same problem). I checked few backups and same problem. First I did as Adrian recommended (Can you try going to preferences / multitrack and check the option "reference all open audio and video files when saving sessions") but nothing changed so I restarted and that did it. Opened the same session and problem solved.

Sorry I need to update this - I thought creating a local copy was the answer. Turns out it's only half-way there. Still, many thanks to @SteveG!

Here's where I'm totally stumped. I open my session, a bunch of my clips load, but then the rest of them are stuck at this phase: "Reading Wave PCM" and they're all just "waiting" at 0%. I've attached a screen grab.

I've tried closing files that I don't need to use right away (i.e. everything in my sfx tracks, I'm starting with dialogue) but to no avail, I have a little message in the bottom right that continues to say "processing x# of files".

Any ideas on this one? My only guess would be that it's one or two specific clips in my dialogue tracks that are causing this audio mixing constipation. But which clips? I have no idea. There is literally no indication that any clips in my files pane are loading.

HI Emily

I noticed the same issues as well.

Can you try going to preferences / multitrack and check the option "reference all open audio and video files when saving sessions" to see if that helps?

i was doing a mix for a feature film. checking the option helped speed up my session loading time. i hope this is the solution that works for you.

cheers

The first thing I'd be suspicious of is the external HD...

When the clips open, do they open directly, or are they being sample-rate converted and opened as copies? If it's a relatively small project, I'd do a local copy of all of the clips and video, and see how long that takes to open. If it takes an eternity to copy the clips onto your local drive, then you'll get a bit of a clue!

Hmm, there's no indication that they're being sample-rate converted, they're all at 48000 Hz. When they do open, they're just open.

It's a pretty big project, about 75 minutes long but I think I'll attempt the local copy! Gotta try anything/everything!

Thanks for your help!
