Waveform view background grid lines, can we change the color

Is it true, we cannot change the color of these horizontal background lines, that follow the -3, -6, -9 loudness levels?  These lines I would like to make more visible with a black background. 

 

Here I have selected a range of time, and they are more visible:

Here with no selection, they are hard to see 

 

Nothing in this list seems to match the color of those lines..

so I wonder if they can't be changed.

That is correct; you cannot change the grid brightness or colour independently. If you want to make them appear more clearly, you have to experiment with the waveform foreground and background colors, but that's all you can do.
