while editing discreet clips, all of a sudden the discreet clips become one long clip

Has anyone had this happen. I am editing a bunch of separate clips and then all of a sudden, all the individual clips until the end become one clip. Each time I have to go back to an earlier version and then redo a bunch of work. Why is this happening?
