Question

Why can't I hear my multitrack playing out?

After working perfectly for most of today, I now can't hear my multitrack play out. I can the individual tracks perfectly when I switch to waveform view. None of the tracks are muted so it isn't that. The volume indicators for each track react fine as the multitrack plays out but nothing registers in the levels window below, when the multitrack is playing. Any ideas?

Where is the master track routed to?

I don't understand what you mean. What do you mean by "Master Track" and "routed to"?

Audition's multl-track view has a mixer - you click on the mixer tab at the top to reveal it. At the RHS of it are the controls for the master track - this is the bottom track on your main multitrack view. At the top of it there is a box indicating the output routing:

If this isn't routed to the hardware output you're using, then you won't hear anything. You may also need to check in Edit>Preferences>Audio channel mapping  that this remains set up correctly, but if you can hear Waveform view files, it probably is.

Oh, and also make sure that the master fader is set to 0dB. Having that at zero will also give you no output!
