Why can't I record my audio?

I've set my audio hardware to my audio interface and I can see the meter output signal so it's picking up the signal from the microphone but everytime I hit record nothing is there or rather it's like listening to a stream. The sounds of running water is all you can hear. I'm using a Zoom R24 recorder as an interface since it has that capability and I can hear myself using the microphone and see levels on the device itself like normal. Again I can see the signal when using Audition but there is no wavfile or signal on the track when I hit record. What am I doing wrong?

If you are trying to record in Multitrack, you have to do rather more than set the default input - you have to select the actual input you want from your device. So typically on this laptop it looks like this:

And then remember to record-activate the track (see red ring). Only then when you hit Record on the transport will an actual recording take place.

Oh, and if you are using a Mac and Catalina, you will have to enable anything that looks like a microphone in the security settings.
