why won't audition record reliably?

I'm afraid you've told us absolutely nothing useful at all, so we can't tell you. At a bare minimum we need to know whether this is a Mac or a PC, and whether this is in Waveform or Multitrack view. But I have to tell you that Audition normally records very reliably, so this will be caused by something in whatever machine you are using.
