Workflow Question for the MultiTrack System

Hello all.

Pardon my ignorance on this issue, but I just can't seem to figure this out on the new Audition.

I really loved the old Audition, and I've been working on a pre-2010 version up until this year, when I decided to update to the new version. There are a lot of things that are different that I'm getting used to. The most glaring bit that I cannot figure out is: in older version of Audition, when working on the multitrack system, if I was recording something on a track that I was not satisfied with and wanted to re-record, I could go back and record over it without Audition creating a whole new file for it. And now, if I do 10 takes on the same track, I have 10 different files for the track and they're layered on top of each other. So when I save the session, I have dozens and dozens of files of takes that I don't want or need. How can I just... go back to recording over the same track and not have Audition creating new files for each take?

Audition has been like this for quite a while now, and yes if you're used to a very old version, it takes a bit of getting used to. But I'm afraid you'll have to - there's no way of turning this off. If you right-click on the Record button in the transport controls, you'll find that it has two modes of operating now - instant record, and punch and roll (something that people have been asking for for ages). Once you've got used to it, you might find that punch and roll does what you need - albeit in a slightly different way. There's a brief introductory video about it here.
