Announcing a new feature now in Adobe Camera Raw (17.2) – Removal of Distracting People

Under the Remove dialog, under Distraction Removal, we have added an item called “People”.

This feature supports faster and easier detection and removal of distracting people in an image. It is offered as a Tech Preview in the Adobe Camera Raw Plugin-only and is available now. Please try it out and let us know what works well, what doesn’t work well, and anything that might improve the experience.

Thank you!

So far, this feature does not work nearly as well as it does in Photoshop. In my case, the removal often replaces the removed areas with unwanted generative content. (In this example, I removed people and got ducks instead!)

It would be very helpful to add or subtract parts of the detected people as we can with manual removal. Often the auto-detection fails to grab the shadow leading to poorer results.

The tool found a regular person in the background walking towards me which was a promising start.

However, post-processing, instead of providing a suitably-blank background replacement it offered 3 different choices of people moving away from me: a woman on a bicycle, a military person (sailor?) and a businessman who appears to have a skip in their step.

These replacements were very-well integrated into the image; however, the tool is advertised as "distraction removal" (rather than "random alternative distraction substitution") - which is exactly what I am looking for.

Hi, I tried the new Distraction Removal-People tool today for the first time.  I wanted to remove a body that was half in and half out at the edge of my photo.  It removed the body but replaced the removed image with a leg and foot protruding into the photo from the edge where the body had been removed.  I removed the leg and foot manually.  This reminds me of when the remove tool was new, to me it worked about 30/40%.  The tool tended to remove the item in question but replace it with a similar item, e.g. remove an out streched arm with an arm with the hand curled or distorted.  I will say, at this point, the manual remove tool is great, it works well and consistently and the past issues appear to have been resolved.   It appears the new Distraction removal tool is having the same issues as the original manual remove tool had.

I like this new Feature and it can works very nicely and effective but in some case it could be nice to choose between 3 versions , similar to the remove tool. Thans

Love the new removal of distracting people but would also like a Add or Subtract feature to fine tune.

Remarkable! Tried it on a few RAW and JPEG images and worked mostly flawlessly. Great for onscreen images but a bit low-resolution for printing so would like to have an option (someday) to re-generate selected or all corrections as higher resolution. Thanks!

Hello, for my part, after trying, very effective. On the other hand, with the selection, if you want to add an additional group of characters to delete, is it possible, how do you add a new selection? Thank you for your feedback.

Why doesn't the community/adobe.com page offer a translation of the comments?

You can continue the Generative AI Remove manually after the automatic one.

Started with this

Ended up with this :

Notice the very large stone ball that was left in place, it removed some of the trash cans.

Hi! I tried the new feature and it worked really well on a photo with multiple people — until I looked a bit closer and saw that one person had been swapped out with an AI-generated version of a completely different (and random) person 😂
Attaching the photo here for reference. (The darker version is the before)

Hi Rikk,

it works great but it would be useful to have the possibility to edit the mask with a paintbrush.
It happened that one arm was left, I needed to delete it with the Remove function.

Thanks
