Announcing a new feature now in Adobe Camera Raw (17.2) – Removal of Distracting People

Under the Remove dialog, under Distraction Removal, we have added an item called “People”.

This feature supports faster and easier detection and removal of distracting people in an image. It is offered as a Tech Preview in the Adobe Camera Raw Plugin-only and is available now. Please try it out and let us know what works well, what doesn’t work well, and anything that might improve the experience.

Thank you!

I am having mixed results with the Remove Reflections.

It seems to work ok with my CR3 files, but not the DNG

Is Adobe's RAW format not supported?

Yep, it works alright.  Removed two unsuspecting folks in my shot.  The result was a full 5.  out of 5.  nice job Rikk.  and thanks.  Keep up the good work..

I appreciate both the “Remove People” and “Remove Reflections” features. In my experience, the tool effectively removed two small groups of people from my image with impressive accuracy. I have yet to test its performance on larger crowds. Additionally, the “Remove Reflections” feature delivers excellent results, significantly enhancing image clarity.

Definitely needs redefining before public release. It seems to use the same model as gen AI. Why let people use a separate device when they could mask it better than the new tool can.

I'im really impressed!  I took a photo of a bunch of balloons at Disney but got the heads of several people in the way, The remove distraction feature captured and removed them cleanly

Did some testing. Works well on most photo's i tested but got also a result where Remove people in Camera Raw could not find distracting people while remove people in the Remove tool removed all of them perfectly.

I like these tech previews and they hold great promise for the future once properly optimized and with developing AI. Right now, I am working on some travel photos, and dust is a real problem. I love the Heal Tool (working in Lightroom Classic), but working with it manually is extremely slow, laggy and un-optimized on large panoramas, even on a very beefy system (RTX 4090, 64gb RAM). This is thus a feature request for 1) Optimizing the Heal Tool for large images 2) Using AI to automatically detect and remove dust spots as a Distraction Removal. This would be an amazing time saver, and more practical to me than people removal.

I tried it today on several images, some with just one or two people and some with a lot of them. I got mixed results. On a picture of the Acropolis in Athens it removed around 12 people scattered around in front and did a good job. I found that if I opened a Raw file that had been previously edited in Lightroom and I had applied some masks to the people to adust their exposure it did nothing in Camera Raw, as if it didn't see them and they were front and center. Personally, I seldom use ACR so this new tool is not too important to me. My workflow starts with Lightroom and moves to Photoshop if necessary.
