Question

A cheap/free LMS or courseware host?

I'm working with a non-profit organization that is migrating some instructor-led courses to the Net. They need to register users and take payment, and because users will receive continuing ed. credits for the courses, the users must pass a test. The non-profit has little money and also lacks staff they can dedicate to administration of their courses.

So they have selected a site called MyICourse, which offers an LMS and a basic course development environment, for free. This may work. We can launch Captivate sequences and video clips from within the development environment, and use the site's development tool to generate quizzes and record scores. However, I'm not convinced that this is the best solution for the non-profit going forward. My questions:

1. Is there a free or cheap LMS they can plug into their own website, that will handle user registration and record completion of the course with passing test scores?

2. If they must go to another website to host their courseware, is MyICourse the best choice? Does anyone have experience with this site or with any of the others sites that create/host courses?

Thanks for any input you may have!

If the project suits, I'd start with Moodle (as used by the UK's Open University)

    Hi Leah -

There are some free/low-cost ones out there. If you do an advanced search for Learning Management you should find other threads dealing with this subject. There is also a topic called 'Don´t understand how LMS works' under the e-Learning category (instead of General discussiont) where a some options are listed. You might try looking there if you don't want to search.
