@Lilybiri's answer is on track, I just wanted to be sure you're able to see the difference between the source files, as @Lilybiri described; and the published files that are hosted on an LMS or webserver. Also, you should be aware that there have been multiple file extensions based on the Captivate release or version number.

If you have access to the source .cptx, .bak or .cpvc files, you'll have no trouble opening them in the same version of Captivate that the original author used. (You'll need to remove .bak from those files to pen them.) If you have a different version than the author, or if the extensions are different, the files may have been created in an earlier version of Captivate.

    filetypes - Cp Source 2017-01-06_8-04-43

And, if you have a folder with HTML, SWF, CSS, JS, XML and other files:

    filetypes - Cp Publish 2017-01-06_8-03-09

then you're looking at the published files of the other user and you'll need to search for the source files using the extensions above.

    I hope that helps!

Of course. Just open the cptx (or cpvc) project and you'll be able to edit it. Important is to have a license, especially when publishing to avoid the published to expire after 30 days.

A cptx-file is a zipped folder with the extension cptx. Be careful: do not unzip it. Sometimes when sending the file to someone else, your system will recognize it as being a zipped folder and propose to extract the files which shouldn't be done.
