I believe the length is equal to the length of the first option in the drop-down list, or the first correct answer if it's the user entry variety.

I usually add some spaces after the end of the first answer in the dialog box to give room for the down arrow in the drop-down list style of response, or to equal the length of the longest correct answer in the user input style.
