Question

After a user accesses a "Help" slide, how do I get them back to the slide they were previously on?

Hello all,

I'm creating a project with PowerPoint slides and a software simulation portion where the user "performs" a task on a separate program.  I'd like to add a single "Help" slide that the user can refer to if needed.  Once they review the help page, I'd like to have a link that will bring them back to the slide they were on when they clicked the Help button.

I'm using Captivate 3 and I'd really appreciate any thoughts on how to do this without creating a Help slide for each slide in the project.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

One last thought...

Not sure what the content is in the help slide, but if it's a single slide wouldn't a rollover slidelet work if placed on all the simulation slides?  At worst, add an image behind the rollover area that looks like a help button so the user knows to click, or rollover in this case.  Even possibly a rollover text caption or image would work, depending on the single help slides contents?

Sorry, didn't quite understand your question till now.  (hope I do now)

I've done a few projects off ppt imports and added both demo's and sims.  I usually leave the ppt as a single project, then create the demos and sims as seperate projects.  You could create your help slide as a seperate project, goto preferences and set start-end to "close project" on end.  Then insert a text button on the first slide of your simulation.  Set the button text to Help and in the properties have it open the other project (the single help slide).  Be sure to click the drop down arrow and set it to open in New window and uncheck the option for continue playing project (this will pause the main project till the student returns from help).  Now that you've set all the properties copy that button and paste it on the remainder of the simulation slides.

Here's what happens.  The button is obviously going to appear throughout the entire simulation because you've pasted it on all slides.  Anywhere they get stuck they click the Help button and it launches the help project in a new tab or window (depends on their browser settings).  By setting the end properties of the help project to close, the student is prompted to close the new tab/window after viewing the help slide.  Once closed they find themselves sitting right where they left off in the simulation in the original tab or window.

I've done this in Cap 4, so I'm not positive everything will work, or work the same in Cap 3 but it's a though.

Hope this helps, or maybe gets ya in the right direction.

Your solution of creating a separate project for the "Help" slide and then launching that when the user clicks a button would actually be a very simple way of achieving with the OP is after. Good idea - I would go down that road if it was me.

Thanks Michael!  Still very new to Captivate, so I'm never sure if my ideas are good or a little crazy.  lol

ps.  Also noticed a setting in button properties yesterday for "go to last visited slide".  Setting a button this way will bring them back to where they left off without having to utilize the second project.

Why not add a button or click area with the on success action set to "jump to slide", then enter the slide number you want them to return to?

How would you know which slide they should return to if you don't know which slide they came from?

In Captivate 3 you don't have the variables needed so I fail to see any solution for that.

Hi Matt,

In Captivate 3 there is no direct way to do what you want unfortunately. In Captivate 4 you would be able to use the system and user defined variables and advanced actions to take care of your problem. However, these aren't available in Captivate 3.

If you can use Adobe Flash you could construct a Flash file that you could import into your Captivate project and let that handle the navigation you are after, but that is the only solution I can see.
