Annual "cannot open projects" thread

Hey all! I'm a veteran Captivate-warrior, using it since v1, now on v4. I'm not so sure I'm going to recommend the company upgrades to v5 based on continuing problems such as these

Last summer, I wrapped up  25 project files I did at my home office and copied them to a network drive for storage. This year, I went and grabbed them--I copied all of them to my local drive and got to work...

Bonk!

Not quite. None of them will open properly. I get no message at all--I execute the command to open the file, and it appear to start loading, but then Captivate just displays a grey screen. I did not open them over the network, nor are they very large. None exceed 90 slides. All have audio, but they are not huge files at all.

I can create a new project file and import all the slides. But I don't want to do that because it will take forever. I want to open my existing project files.

Some info on my system: It is not the same system as the one on which these were created, but it is the same OS and same version of Captivate. This system is a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate. All I've installed so far is MS Office, Captivate, Flash, Adobe Reader, and Chrome. I am running Captivate as Administrator.

Curiously, I have solved the issue by doing a Help > Update of CP4. It was possibly a versioning issue? If I save a project in a copy of CP4 that had been updated and tried to open it in a copy that had not, would that cause the problem?

Perhaps the installer should be made to check for updates before first run, to avoid this problem.

    Thanks all!

How long did you wait before giving up on the projects opening in Cp5?

I find that sometimes it can take several minutes for the migration process to complete, depending on the project.  During this time Captivate looks like it's crashed but in fact it IS working.

Try starting a project off and then going for coffee.

It's not CP5--it's CP4. So there should be no migration right, just opening a project as normal? I will let it hang for a while today and see what happens.

UPDATE: I let it sit for quite a while an no dice.

    Hi,

Were you able to open the projects in cp5?

If not, would it be possible to share any of the file that has the issue, so that we can investigate the issue?

You can e-mail to my address vikranth@adobe.com

    Thanks,

    Vikranth.
