Question

Automatic renaming of image

Hi, I have an image called No1.png that I have pulled into the captivate 6 library. I drag it onto the slide and in it's properties, I rename it No1, as it automatically assigns a generic name such as Image_34. This image will be used on all of my slides and needs to retain the name I entered in properties (No1). However, when I drag the image onto another slide from the library, or copy and paste the image from the previous slide, another generic name (Image_35) is created again. It does not retain the No1 name. This object is used and specified in an advanced action I have created that will be on every one of my slides. If I can't figure this out, I will have to rename the image (and any other images) for every slide, which is going to considerable lengthen the time it takes to complete this project. Is there a simple solution that anyone knows of?

Many thanks,

Lisa.

Hello and welcome to the forum,

Each object in Captivate has a unique name. One of the reasons is that you can address it by that name, that ID in (advanced actions). So if you drag an image twice on slides, although it uses the same source image (and this means that the filesize will not increase that much) each 'copy' will have its own name. That way you can hide it by an action on one of the slides, whereas the other copy remains visible. You will not be able to give the same name to two different objects.

Be very careful NEVER to use the same name for two different objects, actions, variables, even decisions. For objects you'll be warned, but for other 'things' this could just lead to have broken the file.

If that image has to be in the same place on each slide, just time it for the rest of the project, or put it on a dedicated master slide. Since you have to address it by an advanced action, the master slide way is excluded because an object on the master slide doesn't have an ID (one of my feature requests).

Have a look at my latest blog post, I used a lot objects timed for the rest of the project in order to limit the number of advanced actions:

You didn't tell which version you are using, but if you do use CP6, watch the webinar in which I explain how to use shape buttons timed for the rest of the project or on master slides. Link and explanation to be found here:
