.bak appended to end of Captivate filename.cptx

In previous versions of Captiave (Cp9 and 2017) occasionally I'd end up with what appeared to be a duplicate of a course, but it had a .cptx.bak extension, and was larger than the non-bak version..  For instance, Mycourse.cptx would become Mycourse.cptx.bak. 

What does this indicate?  It happens much more often in v2019 (11.8.1.219).

I can usually just delete the .bak version, provided I have a normal version with the same date and roughly the same time.  Or I'm pretty sure I could manually remove the .bak and then the file would open again and seemed to be fine, though it might be missing the last edit or edits.

    It is a backup copy for security. The option to have a backup when opening an existing project is activated by default in several recent versions while it was not the case in older versions. If you don't want it you can deactivate the option under Preferences, General Settings. The backup copy is saved in the same folder as the project itself.

    The backup copy is also captured the last time the project was saved and closed.  So, if you were working on your CPTX file and Captivate crashed and corrupted it, you could remove the bak from the backup filename and resume working on your project, but that backup would not contain any of the changes you had made just before the crash.  To recover and even more up-to-date version of the project file you would need to resurrect it from the cache version.
