Question

Best project size

If I can safely assume that my users will be operating with a screen resolution of at least 1024x768 and I want the movie to be as large on the screen as possible, what is a safe size? Best practices? What do people here normally do for that "full screen" experience?

Thanks!

I spent a long time working this out some years ago and found that a Captivate project size of 995x627 worked very well for all of my clients where 1024x768 was the minimum screen resolution.

I documented all the reasons why 995x627 worked out best in this blog post: http://www.infosemantics.com.au/optimal_screen_size

One other thing I suggest you do as well is modify the HTM templates in Captivate with a little bit of CSS code to remove the 15 pixels of 'dead space' that normally surrounds all Captivate projects when published to SWF.  I'm going to document how to do that today and add the link to this thread,

    Hi Rod

I am wondering if your view of what is the best project size has changed? I constantly battle with what should be the best size to capture a system simulation of our application, particularly when I do not know what users will be viewing the training on - other than to be pretty certain its a desktop or laptop - not mobile device. I thought that if I used the YouTube standard size of 1280 x 720 which allows me to capture our application at 100% without too much need for scrolling or need to resize  - that would be a good standard size to use.

I do like to include a fixed Table of Contents but noticed how a colleague of mine had to scroll right to see the content as he didn't have a wide screen laptop.

I have started to publish to html5 only due to the Flash restrictions. In a previous post of mine when I was experiencing ghost lines - you mentioned to turn off scaleable html.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks

This is very much something that is going to be different for each organisation you deal with.  If you have found an absolute minimum size that you must use to display your app then you need to run with that.

However, if you and your colleague had to scroll sideways then you have to either reduce the width of the project screen to accommodate your TOC width, or reduce your TOC width, or use an overlay TOC instead.  The height of the project size just needs to be appropriate to still accommodate any playbars you need to display on the Windows desktop, the browser, and the Captivate content.

Depends on how you deploy? You have to take into account:

    • the real estate taken up by the browser or the LMS
    • the height of the playbar, at least 19px
    • if you use the TOC in separate mode add at least 250px to the width

I'am working at a brand new, huge project. Online learning, distributed exclusive via internet.

One of the very first actions i've made, was to make a analysis of our clients server log files. According to the results, i know that in this specific case 85% of the visitors can be perfectly satisfied with a screen layout of 964 x 480 px.... and i also know, that we have to force round about 20% of the learners to update their flash-player...

    Kind regards
