Bugs in captivate?

Alrite,

I inherited captivate project from previous owner. I found something that really blew my mind off. I believe it is one of many captivate bugs.

Here is the looks of the captivate file

slide 1: title screen

slide 2: welcome screen

slide 3: objectives

slide 4: instructions

slide 5: multiple choice

slide 6: multiple choice

slide 7: info slide

slide 8: info slide

slide 9: multiple choice

slide 10: info slide

slide 11: exit

So says we started the project from slide 1. You navigate through slide 2, 3, 4, and then you got to the first question (slide 5). Now if you go back to slide 4, and you try to go to slide 5 again. It won't let you. There was a "next" button which action is "Go to Next Slide". But however you try to change the actions on the "next" button on slide 4 to say "Jump to Slide" to "slide 5". It just won't go to slide 5 (from slide 4).

Does anyone has any ideas? Is there a logic behind this that won't allow user to go to the first question after it is visited? Any suggestions are welcome.

I am using CP5. This quiz scope really amazes me. So you cannot really jump around the whole project? I did some experiments with blank project. I did noticed when you jumped out of the scope of quiz, then any questions that you have not answered will be considered "complete". So says you have a "glossary" button in one of the question slides, this "glossary" button will take you to glossary slide outside the quiz scope. If you go back to the quiz questions, all the unanswered questions will be considered "complete". To avoid this, we can create duplicate glossary slide inside the quiz scope, but that seems counter intuitive. I am open for any suggestions or ideas.

I am confused with the concept of quiz scope. I cannot find this anywhere in the Captivate livedocs, or on the web.I would like to understand more about the concept of quiz scope. It has been confusing for me.So I will really appreciate if someone can point me where I can read more about it.

Thanks in advance

Hello,

No, cannot point you to an article. There are a lot of threads that will explain this concept but Search is not functional anymore.

Think of the quiz scope like a labyrint: once you enter (this is where the first score is given to a question slide or a scored object) you should stay in the labyrint until you decide the first attempt is over. When you leave, this attempt will be considered as over, if you did not try all the questions or scored object they are considered as not answered, no score, like if you did not explore all paths in the labyrint. You can re-enter but it will be for a second attempt.

So if you want to visit slides while an attempt is going on, you have to make sure those slides are in the labyrint. If you want to be able to navigate everywhere, make sure that all your slides are in the labyrint, by making the entrance on the first slide (first scored object) and keeping the score slide at the end. You are not obliged to put all the question slides in sequence.

I understand that you are confused, but once you get the concept you will be able to cope with it.

It's not a bug.  This seemingly illogical behaviour is due to Captivate's Quz Scope concept.

Every Captivate project can have only one quiz and its 'Scope' starts with the first scored interactive object or quiz question.  Because your example has the first part of the quiz on slide 5, slide 4 is just outside the quiz scope.  If you begin a quiz and then jump back outside the scope, Captivate assumes you've terminated the quiz and freezes all questions therein.

To workaround this, place a scored button on one of the initial slides so that the user clicks this button to continue.  This extends the quiz scope and means the user is much more unlikely to leave the scope while navigating around.

Hi Rodward,

Thank you very much for your response. Do you mind explaining more about "scored button" and what do you mean by placing on the initial slides?

Hello,

Which version of CP are you using? Insert a button, than look for 'Reporting', in CP4 it will be in the Properties dialog box, in CP5 it is in the Reporting Accordion of the Properties panel for that button. Put perhaps 1pt to it and check Include in Quiz'. Then the Quiz scope will start with the slide where this button resides.
