Built-In TOC Status Flags

Hello,

Please can someone clarify how the status flags work in the built-in TOC? I'm guessing it is only a visual indicator for slides viewed?

If I navigate backwards, and then forwards in the TOC, the slide is ticked as complete. This is not what I would want learners to see. Can the tick be based on anything other than slide views?

Another case for why this is frustrating is when a learner revisits a course, as the slide they return to is automatically ticked as completed in the TOC even if they haven't interacted with anything on that slide yet.

I am using AAs to show/hide the playbar inc nav buttons based on my completion criterea for each slide, e.g. click-to-reveal. So when the TOC slide ticks are showing but the playbar buttons are still hidden, it is poor learner experience. This is a linear course, but some learners may wish to go back before moving forward again, which is how the status flags can end up appearing early, or on re-visit as stated.

The same AA's only show the playbar if the slide has already been visited, in combination with the completion criteria being met.

Because I cannot control when the TOC decides to show the ticks, is there anything I can do at the slide level to improve the learner experience?

I opted to use the built-in TOC because I had such a poor experience of implementing a custom one, both on the software side, but also implementation on my LMS. While I'm already finding the built-in features to be saving time, limitations like this are another reason why I won't be sticking with Captivate in the long run.

Still, in the meantime, any words of wisdom in this area would be appreicated.

Thanks in advance.

It is not clear to me what you want exactly to give the learner a better experience? Answering to a question in the forum, I developed to show a percentage visted, whatever the path followed by the learner for a non-linear project:

There is also a solution 1 but you'll see the link that that first solution in this blog.

    Hi Lily,

The better experience I am referring to is learners not seeing a tick next to a slide in the built-in toc unless they have met the completion critera for that slide.

Most of my slides have click-to-reveal AAs with variables used to trigger the showing/hiding of the playbar.

If the learner arrives at a slide, goes backwards, then forwards, the slide is given a tick in the built-in TOC, before any of the AA's have been triggered - like I said, I think this is giving the learner a poor experience. It could be quite confusing to see something as complete that isn't.

The same principle applies to re-entering the course via my LMS. Any slide the learner immediately lands on upon re-enter is ticked in the built-in TOC. This could also cause confusion for the learner.

I can accept if this is just how this feature of the software works. But if there are any workarounds using the in-built features to improve the status showing, I would like to hear them.

Thanks for sharing the blog, but this solution is not quite what I'm looking for.

    Regards,

You still tell only what you don't like, not what you like to see.

The blog was a solution to replace the default progress bar which is IMO very confusing when a learner is in a non-linear course. It could be completed with a visualisation.

The TOC is completely closed, you cannot edit beyond what is provided in the Settings.

Maybe you want a slide progress bar, which is also possible. And maybe on top of that a global progress bar or a custom TOC. Lot is possible in Captivate. Bit astonished that you don't use Shared actions for Click/Reveal interactions.
