Calculus Assessments

Hello,

I am working on a project for a client that is converting all sorts of videos to eLearning courses. We are working on a Calculus course right now and trying to put together assessments. However, many of these questions require the ability to answer in equation form and check the equation for accuracy. I have a lot of experience with Advanced Actions and have constructed what I can for some of the questions. I know MathMagic is no longer available, but I'm wondering if since it being removed from Captivate, if anyone knows of any tool, plugin, widget, etc. that someone has created that allows a learner to build equations the the course can assess accuracy on, even if we're only working with advanced actions and assigning values to variables as you can do with text entry boxes. Thanks.

I don't know exacctly  what you want. MathMagic only allowed to create images of equations, didn't let you set up assessments as you seem to wish for. AFAIK you'll not find any widget or plugin to allow that in Captivate. You can use TEB's to ask for values which will be sotred in variables automatically and use advanced/shared actions to validate the result. For more complicated calculations you will have to use JavaScript of course, since Captivate's mathematical operator are limited to the 4 basic operators.

Right, I'm currently using TEBs in that manner, just without any means of either the course developer or the student to construct equations to look as they should instead of plain text and keyboard shortcuts, it's a bit clunky and does not quite achieve what we're looking for. As much as possible we are trying to recreate calculus questions that would appear on a printed exam and have the solutions follow a similar format, as they would do on a printed exam. I'm just wondering if anyone knows any tools to help with these sorts of things.

Captivate is a great eLearning authoring tool, 'allround'. In my previous professional life I was teaching in a university college, departments of consturction (lot of maths as well). I sincerely believe for that type of assessments you should search for a dedicated tool. Since almost 10 years iI answer questions on this forum almost daily.  If my memory is correct, the type of requirement you ask for has been mentioned maybe 3 times, not more.  Crossing my fingers that you get a more helpful answer but I am doubtful.
