Can a matching type knowledge check question provide hints?

I have a two-column matching question that is used as knowledge check in my CBT. Each column has eight objects and each object has only one correct answer (a one to one match). I'd like to provide my users hints or some kind of messaging if they are not matching the options up correctly. The only option I see available is to provide a failure message once they've completed the entire eight matching objects. And, I don't see how I could customize this to let them know, at the very least, how many objects they've matched correctly.

I've thought about changing this to a drag and drop slide but I already have used one of these in the CBT as a knowledge check and I wanted some variety.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you!

You are quite correct that the default Matching question does not give you the option to customise feedback for each actual match.

The Drag and Drop interaction would be your best solution because it allows you to use Object Actions to show feedback for each specific object dropped on any of the targets.

You have to choose between adding more variety in question types or using the best type of interaction for the requirement.

Thanks for confirming what I thought might be true, Rod. I had hoped there was some kind of work around. Guess I'll make this a Drag and Drop Interaction.
