Question

Can a SCO served from an LMS play an MP4 from the users local C drive?

I have a client that has such poor bandwidth at their locations they cannot play video files located on the company's LMS web server.

So they are asking if it is possible to load the same MP4 video file onto specific company PCs that will be used in each office and have the user click a button in the SCO served from the LMS that will simply open and play the local MP4 sitting on the PC hard drive.

I have made some tests to see if this is possible (e.g. using file:///c:myvideo.mp4) but it would appear that browser security prevents a page served over HTTP from being able to reference a file on the local file system.

Has anyone tried this approach successfully? Or does anyone have a better method of delivering the local MP4 file from within the Captivate SCORM?

No.  We ran into too many permission issues and gave up.  The best solution (as usual) is to deliver the video via the web.

If the computers were running a localhost you could link them if the files were placed in the localhost directory..

You could also load the files to a specific location and use an "input" dialog and have the users select the video. You could have an instruction as to the path of the video, you cannot create a default path.
