Question

Can Captivate produce e-books?

As a newcomer to Captivate it appears to me the software is focussed primarily on products that rely on narration and automated actions. (This would explain why Captivate has such limited text-editing capability.) I am writing an interactive e-textbook, not an interactive slide show. I don't want the book to be narrated, and I want to the users to move through pages on their own. Given the limited text capability of Captivate and the limited set of drawing tools (No pen tool?), it's looking to like I picked the wrong software. I'm wondering if I should just swallow the subscription cost and move on to a different authoring tool. Advice on how to go here would be appreciated. The authoring  limitations of Captivate are already frustrating. I don't want to continue developing in Captivate if it's not the right application for what I'm trying to do.

Thanks for the advice. I was able to transfer my subscription from Captivate to CC17.

Yes Captivate is more designed to create interactive narrated slide shows rather than e-books.

If interactive PDF is what you really want, then I agree with Steve that InDesign might be a better choice.

But then you also might want to consider whether or not you intended your product to be delivered to both desktop and mobile devices of vastly different screen sizes.  If so, then you would need to carefully weigh the HTML capabilities of InDesign against what Captivate offers.

    Hey Greg,

If you want to create an interactive e-book I would definitely use Adobe InDesign instead of Captivate. It is a full- on-desktop publisher, so you have pixel level control over fonts, kerning, spacing etc and has a high level of interactivity which can be shared via Interactive PDF.

    Cheers
