I can't flip a smart shape as per the instructions. It won't drag through itself and flip. I have the subscription version.

Could you explain what you mean by 'flip a smart shape', because what I mean by flipping is to create a mirrored image, either in vertical or in horizontal direction. That has never been possible with smart shapes, or I must have missed something. You can rotate a smart shape, not flip.

To reverse its direction, i.e. make an arrow that points right flip to point left. What's on the Adobe website below isn't working.

Flip smart shapes (available only in the update for subscription and Adobe Software Assurance customers only)

Click the smart shape and drag one of the handles in the desired direction. For example, to flip an arrow to left, click the handle at the tip of the arrow head and drag it all the way to the left so that it flips along the Y-axis.

Whow, thanks, just discovered that this is indeed a change in 6.1.319. I never read the help-file, my bad.

Before this version only way to turn this arrow in a flipped version, was to rotate 360° but the problem was that inserted text would be mirrored then. Remember having asked for that possibility, and only today see that it has changed.

It is working perfectly for me in that version. I dragged the point on the top of the arrow to the left, and if there was text it just adapted. How did you try?
