Can't Print Help Files

I don't have a print button available when I go into the help menu. Adobe asked me to re-install, but it is still missing. Has anyone else encountered this ? Thanks for any help.

    Hello Rick. You said . . .
    quote:

Sorry it seemed to bother you that I offered the explanation.
Explanation? You took a single-sentence cautionary note and created a book-length rant against the wisdom of users reading my advice, Adobe's Help system, the Certified Student manuals - I guess motherhood wasn't mentioned but there was probably a time-issue that prevented it.

You haven't responded to my last two private emails, Rick. If that was an accident, you might want to check your email filters or watch more carefully for my address. I'll try again to reach you by private email - if I again get no response, I'll join you in discussing the OT subjects of hurt feelings and appropriate behavior in the public forums - but I really do not believe that discussion is at all appropriate here.

    Hi hoytwillrise,
I haven't a clue what or who "level 2" tech support is, but am happy you are happy. Also, I see no way on earth that either of the "solutions" you mention could have had anything to do with your "Print" problem. The version of Flash has nothing to do with the Help system, nor printing, and your trip to the Adobe web-site sounds like they had you make changes to the security settings for Flash - which - again - has no bearing on the problem you described. On the other hand, if you accidentally followed my earlier instructions, you would have seen the "Print" button, and I suspect that is what happened. By the way, are you aware that you can print any page by just right-clicking it and selecting "Print" from the context-menu?? I should have pointed that out earlier, as it is a function built into any browser-based document.

Your comment " How about designing your programs ... yada yada ..." leads me to believe you think you are talking to "Tech Support" or Adobe staff now. You are NOT. Adobe does not take part in these forums, even to the point of reading your posts. These forums are strictly "peer-to-peer", all posts here are from users, just like yourself.

    Have a nice day.

Hi, problem was solved with help of level 2 tech support by A: Installing newer version of flash: but then still didnt have a print button in offline help, and b: changing some sort of settings for the flash program which involved going to a particular adobe/flash website & making changes there. I find that extremely convoluted & it places the burden on the end user for no reason. How about designing your programs so I can print help files without doing anything at all except either pressing abutton or going into a menu. For instance the online help offers NO ability to print. On the other hand level 2 tech support was excellent.

    Rick,
The question "How can I print Help" was asked - and answered. There was nothing to disagree with, nor rant about. That;s just my opinion.

    Hello Larry

I totally understand the gist of the original question was answered.

However, in addition to answering the initial question, you added:
P.S. Keep in mind that sometimes the on-line help will have more (newer) information than the Help file that was originally created to be used with the desktop release of Captivate.

This would seem to imply that folks may be "missing out" if they opt to switch off the default server based help, so you recommend leaving help configured for the default. Obviously everyone is far too busy to carefully compare the content between the two, but honestly, I would be totally surprised if there was any difference observed.

I've also been made well aware that some here seem to find any response I offer to be nothing but irriatating. Consequently, I have been very careful to only post when it's obvious that either the thread hasn't been responded to or if I have a particular insight that might be worthwhile to add.

Sorry it seemed to bother you that I offered the explanation. I really do try very hard not to ruffle anyone's feathers. But it seems I manage to miss the mark anyway.

    Sincerely... Rick

By the way, I don't know who at Captivate asked you to reinstall the software for this problem, but that is one really ignorant statement for too many reasons to count.

Ah well, stop by here first for most of your problems - we actually have users who know what they are talking about and I doubt a single one would advise a reinstall to fix that problem . . .

    Hi all

I'd like to offer up a different viewpoint than Larry has. I never ever advise folks to leave Captivate or RoboHelp set so it looks for internet based help as opposed to offline help. Why?

    * Offline help is loaded locally. It will be faster to access and more stable. Besides, why generate additional internet traffic searching for the help?

    * Larry does make a good sounding point mentioning the ability for the help authors to provide additional updated content in a web based system once the product ships. But in reality, I think this is mostly sales speak (for a salesperson to convince company X to purchase RoboHelp for this nifty "airplane help" (yeah, that's what it's called. Airplane help. Captivate and RoboHelp check the web first, then if they can't get to the web based help, they are supposed to shift locally and resort to the locally installed "offline" version. But the thing is, it fails often and results in many posts (at least in the RoboHelp forums) where users complain help flat doesn't open. I usually jokingly say the airplane crashed.)

I say it's a pipe dream, because speaking as a help author, it's my experience that once a product ships, the help author is busy working on the next iteration of the help. Forget updating help for what's already been shipped.

Again, just my opinion. This is one area where I deviate from the Student guide in my Captivate classes and stress that students should always consider opting for offline help as a "best practice".

    Cheers all... Rick

    Hi hotwillrise,
    Please ...

    1) Open Captivate
    2) Click "Help"
    3) Click "Use Off-line Help"
    4) Click "Help > Captivate Help" (or press F1)

You should now have off-line help open and the "Print" function will be there for you. Have a nice day.

P.S. Keep in mind that sometimes the on-line help will have more (newer) information than the Help file that was originally created to be used with the desktop release of Captivate.
