I used Adobe captivate to record a video using 'Video demo' mode, my system resolution is 2560*1440.

I published the video also with resolution 2560*1440, however, I can't open the mp4 it generated. When I double click the video, I got the following error message:

If you do the same process but with a smaller-dimension video, can WMP play it?

Or is it perhaps due to the output codec (MP4)?

I like Media Player Classic for local video playback - lightweight, can have multiple instances, open-source, supports tons of formats/codecs, good properties reports...

So if possible, download, install, and see if that can open the output video? If it can, the problem is likely an issue with WMP. If it cannot, there maybe something funky with the video output.

What version of Captivate are you using?
