Cant select text captions in properties?

The'select' option under properties disappears and will not let me choose any of the options that I need to change text in nonshowing boxes?  It will work and then go away.  Sometimes if I reopen the file later, it will be an option.  Sometimes not...what Is going on?

I don't understand your question at all. Could you explain more in detail, maybe show screenshots? Which 'select' option are you talking about, for which object? What are those 'nonshowing boxes'? Maybe it is a terminology issue, I'm not a native English speaker.
