Captivate 10 (2017) cannot preview or publish after upgrade

Hi All,

I am running a Windows 10 laptop with 8GB RAM and an Intel i7 processor and recently upgraded to Captivate 10.0.0.192.

From the moment of upgrade, I can no longer run any type of preview or publish my project.

I am trying to create a HTML5 project. I upgraded the project and when I noticed the preview wasn't working, I figured it had a corrupt object in it somewhere. Unable to track it down, I re-built the project from scratch entirely in Captivate 10.

The brand new project doesn't preview in Edge, IE or Chrome, or when published and uploaded to the LMS - the behaviour is the same.

In the HTML 5 in browser preview I get the buffering symbol.

In any of the Flash based previews (project, next 5 slides, etc.) I get either random elements partially visible, a clicking sound, bits of a skin (not the one selected for the project), or a dialog that 'no sufficient memory resources to preview the file. Externalize the Adobe Captivate resources in the SWF file and try again.' (NOTE: This is a HTML5 project however and there are no Flash elements in it. I have verified this with the HTML tracker.)

I have read the forum and tried many of your suggestions, including:

  • Reinstalling Captivate
  • Hiding the slides and re-enabling them one-by-one to identify a corrupt object
  • Rebuilding the project
  • Trying a different browser
  • Trying to run the project on a server/LMS
  • Turning off advanced project compression (even though I'm publishing to HTML5)
  • Clearing my project cache
  • Trying anything, really...

I also tried a responsive project, which previews somewhat, but none of the master slide elements are visible and it tends to break after a few slides.

What on earth is wrong with the application?

Any further suggestions will be gratefully received at this point. I really wish I hadn't upgraded, but unfortunately the Captivate 9 application no longer runs when I try to launch it either so I'm stuck with this now.

While I am on a Mac, not a PC, I have the same problem. I have recreated the file three times, and am down to 3 slides - a title slide, one question slide, and the results slide. It works fine in a normal preview, but as soon as I try to publish or do any other type of preview (HTML5, SCORM, etc.) I get the spinning wheel of death. Nothing displays in the HTML5 tracker.

Have you tried uploading your published output to a web server or LMS (e.g. SCORM Cloud) to test from there?

Sometimes the issue is local to your computer and HTML5 ideally needs a web server environment for a true test.

@RodWard. Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I have tried publishing the courseware. The behaviour is the same when on an LMS. Adobe support tried this as well without any success.

I spoke to Adobe support yesterday for quite some time. They went through many of the same checks I'd already made (different browsers, turning off project compression, clearing the cache, rebuilding the project, etc.).

They initially felt it was due to my skin customisations (I'd changed the button face, flow and icon colours on Project > Skin Editor), but then also suggested it was the question pool (I'm not sure about this, as I suspected this initially too and re-built the project to rule this out).

It was left to re-build my projects. Again. And see if that helped...

I tried building a completely new course yesterday from scratch without even adding any content (New Project > Blank Project). It wouldn't preview after I got to slide number three, with no content - just blank master slides of a title slide and two content slides.

I'm going to try again today attempting to preview after every action to try and pinpoint what change is breaking it. I'll post back with an update in case it helps you with your problem, too

I don't see 'Clean Preferences' in your list with steps you tried? I am running CP2017 along CP9 on two Win10 systems. It looks like an issue on your system. Do you have everything installed on your system, not on a networked drive? Do the paths in Preferences point to folders on your system (hope you don't have a roaming profile)? Do you run Captivate as Administrator. Chrome is my default browser.

Hi Lilybiri,

Thank you for your prompt response. I was beginning to wonder if it was system-specific myself.

  • I launch Captivate as an administrator.
  • The files are local, not on a network drive.
  • I cleared the preferences for Captivate 9 and 10. No change, unfortunately. Captivate 9 still won't launch and Captivate 10 won't preview or publish.

To rule out my machine, I've downloaded and installed Captivate onto a different Windows 10 machine. This is a clean laptop which hasn't previously run any version of Captivate. I get exactly the same behaviour.

Both machines are comfortably within the minimum specs.

It's just bizarre...
