Question

Captivate 12 removes flexibility?

Hello, so I am looking for some help if anyone has any answers or thoughts on this.

I have recently got V12 and it seems to be wildly inflexible compared to 11.8.

It doesn't seem like the flexibility is there to do any of the following:

*have a banner across the top with a company logo in the left corner as have text in the right corner linking out to external pages. Ie. A help page.

*have content in the body of the slide and then also have a list of buttons on either side that can act as a "navigational menu" for the purposes of jumping around the project as required in a "choose your own path" manner instead of linear progression (in the case where there is generalised content but some can be skipped by certain audiences)

As well as some other things.

Am I missing something?

It looks like the main cause of the inflexiblity is the absence of verticle blocks and the ability the resize blocks freely.

Does anyone have any tips or is able to correct me in saying you can do things like what I have mentioned?

Thanks to anyone who has any thoughts.

I am fairly new to captivate in general, but v12 seems like a step backwards.

The problem (my opinion) is that both versions12 and 11.8 kept the same name 'Captivate'.  You are probably aware of the fact that you can use Captivate Classic and the new version 12 along on the same license. Reason is that those are two completely different applications. In many social media they are seen as a duo comparable with Articulate Storyline (the professional and flexible app) and Rise (more limited and meant for lower level users).

At this moment the new version only allows to create responsive projects. Any responsive project means immediately loss of control for the developer, as is illustrated by the examples posted by you. No master slides anymore in the Theme, which you could use to insert logos, buttons and other elements needed on multiple slides. The functionality of having unlimited scrolling, though very nice on smartphones, means that you are limited to horizontal blocks.  Captivate had two previous workflows to create responsive projects and each of them meant loss of features which you have in non-responsive projects. Breakpoint views gave you some design control but took lot more work hours, Fluid boxes were better for the amount of work and had some nice features (like the smooth font size adapting to the resolution, which is lost in the new version) but had a learning curve and didn't always work as expected. This new version may be easier at first sight, but you need to leave control to the application. I am busy since weeks trying to recreate a responsive project (Fluid Boxes) in 11.5 in the new version 12. So far I have bumped onto the design restrictions a lot and don't like the result that much but I am a control freak. I still have to start replicating interactivities created with shared and advanced actions in version 12, hope that will be less painful.

If you understand what I tried to explain (two different applications) you shouldn't compare them. Use Captivate Classic if you want more control, use the new version for responsive projects to be created quickly and accept the compulsory design with the preset blocks.

Thanks for the response.

I understand what you are trying to say. It's a real shame that the flexibility is gone.

Unfortunately the organisation I am with is making the decision to leave 11.8 behind, due to security risks, so 12 is what we will be left with.

I was hoping I was missing something, unfortunate that I'm not.

Thanks though!

What do you mean by 'security risk'? Honestly if I had to choose I would not opt for 12 in this case. Know that with 12 you will be missing question pools, 360° slides, Video Demo, advanced/shared actions, access to lot of system variables, micro-navigation, master slides, object styles (12 has only text styles), SVG buttons where clickability is limited to the image itself... and much more.
