Update: We've released an early build for Big Sur that fixes the issues that Captivate users are facing. For more details, read this post

Does Captivate work on Big Sur?

Adobe Captivate (2019 release) is NOT COMPATIBLE with Big Sur.

If you launch Captivate (2019 release) on macOS Big Sur (macOS 11), the project editor becomes unusable.

We are working on making Captivate (2019 release) to be compatible with Big Sur.

Meanwhile, you can review the current system requirements for Captivate.

I have worked with Captivate in all of it's iterations over the years, long before Adobe owned it, going back to the RoboDemo versions. I am thoroughly disappointed in this parlticular failure and I don't blame this on Adobe alone. Clearly Mac OS developers have some part of the problem. But I do feel as a loyal user and promoter of Captivate over the years that I am finally being forced to give up and start using another app. My entire team of over 50 will be moving away from Captivate and toward Storyline. You have shown that you don't care at all that we have not had Captivate working since November of 2020--approaching 4 months now. Yeah, you have an early build, but the amount of confusion I would have to manage is more than I care for.

So disappointing.

RoboDemo certainly was not on Mac.

Did you miss the certified build of 12 February?

StoryLine on Mac? Using Parallels? Or using only the web-based Rise?

Of course RoboDemo was not on a Mac. I work on more than one OS.

And yes, I did "miss" the update. I got no word, there is no update within the app, as we are a corporate account with multiple users I usually get notified of an update, which did not come. So yeah, glad there's an update.

How is it that I did not get notified? I use a whole bunch of Adobe apps on Mac OS and Windows and not a single word.

It deels like Captivate is no longer a priority application for Adobe. Its seems to be going the same way as Adobe Director. No major updates in a few years with just a few fixes while the other rival applications are advancing faster. It badly needs a features update and a UI overhaul to make it more user friendly. Our organisation now only keeps Captivate to manage and review legacy content created in Captivate and over 500 of our developers now use another application.

Could you please let us know what app you’re using? With 500 developers you’re the ones to know if it works.

Hi,

We switched to Articulate 360. We use either Storyline or Rise depnding on the need and the knowledge of the developers etc. Mac users use Articulte 360 through VMware. Articulte will soon be releasing updates to support 360 panaormas and video with more options than the Captivate version so it is also useful.

I've really tried to persist with Captivate over the years, loving the relative ease of creation of responsively designed content.

However for the past few months I've been unable to access any of the content created in Captivate 2019 on my Mac (and not I haven't upgraded to BigSur yet.

The benefits that were there years ago aren't advanteages any more, the reliance on flash when this has been retired, the tired old user interface and the enormous complexity of doing simple things... I'm done.

It may be more powerful, but in terms of day to day usability i can no longer justify the effort and so me and my team will join the groiwing number of users of a competitive more articulate web-based soluition that always works on my mac and anyone can use.

Any updates on Adobe's fix for Mac OS Big Sur users?

Will the new build be able to go backwards compatable to the standard Captivate 2019 if I have team members who are still on an earlier Mac OS?

Will there be an option like this for Captivate 2017?

I do not work for Adobe, but based on previous experience I can tell you that the answer is most likely going to be: NO.  If you want to upgrade your iOS to Big Sur you will also need to upgrade your Captivate version to 2019 and install the updates Adobe is working on for Big Sur compatibility.

Are there any news for an update regarding Big Sur? The early build does unfortunately not work for me.

Hi RobKerb,

What issues are you facing with the early build? Could you please share your email id at saghosh@adobe.com so that we can look into the issue?

As far as the update is concerned, we are still working on the update.

Thanks,

Saurav

OK this is now getting beyond a joke, We pay a subscription for Captivate, we should be getting regular updates to the softwarse not just silly avitars and ways to try and convince you to use Adobe Stock

I am moving to Big Sur on Jan 1st becuse all the other sofwtare I use has been updated, if Adobe has not got its act together by then then not only will I be cancelling my subscription and my creative cloud subscription but so will all of my team.

Adobe pull your finger out, get it done

I had to buy Windows 10 and buy a VM to continue to my work because like many developers here to maintain security requirments within our hardware that we use from Apple, some don't have a choice to not update. So I am sure there are many other Independent Contractors or part of a group that had to go this route. What is Adobe doing as a company to compensate for those developers that rely on Adobe to keep up with technology updates. (i.e., either money or free usage of services or etc) OS11 SDK has been released for the other companies more than enough time to create the update required; it was not a surprise this was coming.. Thoughts?

Its quite ridiculous, its been over a month since Big Sur was released. Add to that the time they had with the beta version released.
